JED'S FILMS PREMIER 5/5, 6 & 7/2012

In three nights and three days we experienced the great and bad, the beautiful and ugly, the love and the hate of New York.  In any city these opposites can be found.  I believe though that the more metropolitan a city, the larger it is, the more diverse the population, the more opportunity there is to find extremes.
We came here to support our son and daughter-in-law, Jed and Kate.  But while here we took in the city too.  We toured Times Square on our own in the daytime and the night time.  We ran into some wonderful people.  Smack dab in the middle of Times Square we ran into three elderly ladies from North Carolina, obvious tourists, obviously on their first trip to The Big Apple.  Wayne offered to take their picture for them and then they did for us.  They were bubbly, giggly and so excited to be where they were.  All of a sudden one of them got really excited and called out, "Miss Landsbury, Miss Landsbury!" .....
..... and then took off snapping pictures.  And sure enough, there was Angela Landsbury, being escorted by one of her aides to her stage entrance where she is staring with James Earl Jones in the Broadway play, "The Best Man".  Gracious to the hilt, but in a hurry, she turned to acknowledge her fan and then was whisked off by her aide.

By the time I got my camera out and snapped all I got was the back of her white haired head, her cane and the back side of her aide.  We were impressed with her graciousness and kindness though.

Later that night, we saw the ugly side of things.  As we were near the Hershey store across from the M&M's store a hustler got aggressive and insulting with Wayne.  Wayne tried to just walk away and the man persisted, becoming more demeaning.  Wayne should have walked away, but turned and gave the guy what for and then walked into the store to report the incident to a security guard inside.  The guard sounded like Jed would have sounded, telling Wayne to ignore stupid people like that or you could get killed.  Sad commentary on life that one must take and ignore abusive people and inappropriate behavior, allowing them to dominate ones life.

But we also got to feel more masterful of the subway and mass transit system.  What a thrill to be able to feel more confident in a place you were uncomfortable with a few years back.  Traveling and exploring new areas definitely opens one to new opportunities for growth and experiencing an understanding of other life styles.
We were lucky that our oldest son, Luke, was able to take time off to come up from Maryland area to spend time with us and support Jed and Kate.  We enjoyed the time we spent with him.  It is a good feeling for parents when they see their adult children supporting each other and being part of each other's lives!!!

Anyway, both Saturday night and Sunday night we attended the screening or premiers of 6 films.  Jed had one in each night.  Saturday, "Dear Dog, I Love You" was met very favorably by the audience, beating out 5 other films and was selected as the night's audience favorite!  Quite an honor!  There were no people in the theater at the time of this photo because we arrived early to save seats for later coming family and friends.  The place was packed by the time the films began.

See, more people later.  There you see Kate and beyond her, the star of the film, Paul Newman, (the dog) so named because of his beautiful blue eyes, like his namesake.

In the audience was also Kate's brother, Jon and his wonderful wife.  They were so much fun to be with!

At the end of each evening, the casts and crews of the 6 films were interviewed and photographed.  Here are the principle actors from "Dear Dog. I Love You" and Jed , the screen play writer and director.

Here they added kate, the Executive Producer and the producers.

More of Jed's photo ops that others were posing them for and Wayne just squeezed in a shot too!  Again, both nights, we marveled at the number of people that were clamoring to be with Jed and the number of people complimenting him.  Proud?  Yup!  We were!  By the way, on the night his other film, "Shale" premiered, his film also won The Audience Choice Award!  No photos of that night though, but the same type of activities were prevalent.

We spent much time eating out.  This late night after one of the premiers, we family went to The Shake Shack, a popular eatery.  It was fun being together with family, only we were able to experience the baser side of some of the young people of the city.  In the table right next to Wayne and Ann was a group of college boys and one young woman.  The language they were using and the vulgar stories of their recent conquests were being told in loud enough fashion that all in the area were privy to their conversation.  Wayne received the look from Jed to stay out of it, but after a serious stare down with the young men and Wayne giving it his best teacher look of disapproval, they toned it down and finally left.  I am so disappointed in the debasing, disrespect and dishonor many of the people of our society are placing upon themselves and the lack of respect for others.  It is wrong and it is not as it should be.  I agree it is not my job to correct everybody, but I still am saddened and angry at the direction much of our society is headed.  So many are saying what is right is wrong and what is wrong is right.  Sad!!!!!  One can say that it is their right to choose how they behave and live. But I say their right ends at the point where it infringes on other peoples rights.  Those kids freedom of speech was infringing on my freedom of peaceful gathering.  Nuf!

It is so disappointing and disgusting as I watched many of the films that were presented and applauded that were vulgar and crude.  I am proud that our son's films were honorable, telling a good story and represented the good in life.  I am proud that he received honors from his peers, even though his films did not lower themselves to the peep show, x-rated status.
Isn't that a cute couple sitting across the subway from us?

Jed and Ann went shopping one day for needed items for the expectant Kate.  Ann is such a loving kind person.  Kate had a baby shower a few days after we left and Ann was not going to be left out of the process!

Shop, shop, shop!

It was a wonderful time we had with Jed and Kate and Luke.  And, even with its not so pleasing experiences, we enjoyed most of New York.  We developed more confidence in our cruising the city on our won, we enjoyed our son and daughter-in-law and enjoyed talking to all the little kids and security people of the city.  Oh, we also went to see a Broadway Musical, "Newsies" thanks to Kate and her friends!!  Good times

JED PRESENTS!! 5/3 & 4/ 2012

On May 3, we were taken to the Salt Lake International Airport at 5:00 AM and boarded a plane to Dallas and then another to New York.  While Ann occupied herself with reading calmly....
....Wayne anxiously peered out the window worrying about how high we were above the ground.  Did I mention that Wayne does not like to fly?  In this Wayne and his sister-in-law, Linda, are very similar!!

When we arrived in New York, we took the bus to 116th and then walked the rest of the way to Jed and Kate's apartment.  We found our son preparing his speech he was giving the next night at the Opening Ceremonies of the 25th Columbia University Film Festival.  Jed has been a student at Columbia University for 5 years working on his Masters of Fine Arts in Film after completing a BFA in Film and BA in English at BYU.  Just like Megan, Bethany, Angi, and Amanda have all supported our sons as they developed their needed requirements to begin a career, so too has Kate worked hard over the years to support Jed as he developed the skills needed to pursue his dreams.  We were here to honor both Jed and Kate for this accomplishment!  As well as completing this Masters Degree, Jed has developed himself and a reputation for his craft, thus he was honored to be a presenter at last year's and this year's film festival.  Did i mention we are proud?

The next night, May 4th, we were in a huge New York Theater near Times Square, thrilled at being there with our son, his wife and many other film people of college and beyond.  Of the many presenters, the one that preceded Jed directly was Chevy Chase.  I had been a long time fan of this actor and comedian and was looking forward to seeing him and possibly meeting him.  But after this crotchety, bitter, rude, unprepared and un-caring old man presented the film he was to introduce, I had lost all respect for the man.  I still like his films, but my bubble was burst as to the man that was the actor.  I would not cross the street to shake his hand.  I was disappointed, as were several of the people sitting near me.

A breath of fresh air came as Jed was the next presenter.  Yes there was personal prejudice here, but Jed did not need that.  He stood on his own, well prepared, respectfully speaking of the person he was honoring, caring and compassionate towards the many people this person had benefited by crossing her paths. We were proud of his efforts and the honor that was given him in being asked to be a presenter and in the honor he gave to his person he was presenting.  Many people, afterwards complimented him on a well done job and congratulated us for having such a fine son.  Did I mention we were proud?

Proud enough to put in two pictures of this presenter!  What a handsome guy!!

Directly following Jed, was Michael Moore.  I was prepared not to like this guy.  I am not a supporter of the political opinions he expresses in his films and when I have seen him on interviews, I was not impressed with his stand.  But I was wowed by his well prepared, caring, compassionate, upbeat presentation and words of advice to the film making world.  Well done Michael Moore!  I would love to shake your hand and have dinner with you some day.  I am glad you were asked to present at this forum.  My image of you has been altered. Still not sure I agree with you on some points, but you are a strong, convicted person! You made my evening!

Another thing we were impressed with were the vast number of people that complimented Jed on his service he has performed at the University, his integrity and his film making skills.  There are many that wish to rub shoulders with him and be in his camp.  Did I mention proud parents?

I snapped this as Jed listened to another person complimenting him on his craft skills.  Do you see a proud wife and mother?

Of course, this particular congratulations distributor was Kate's brother and his wife who flew out to NY from WA to support Jed and Kate in their activities.
Never the less, we came here to support and left the evening well pleased.

A DAY IN PROVO 5/2/2012

The day before we flew to New York and Maryland, we got to spend a day with two of our grand children, Batman and Pineapple.  While their Dad was teaching and Mom was teaching someone the ropes of her job so she could be replaced when they move, we stole the kids!
Of course Batman wanted to go where he could look at trucks and tractors, so we found a place on BYU campus where construction was going on.  Little boys can stand for hours watching trucks and tractors work!!
Another favorite haunt of these two little ones is the campus duck pond.  To get there is a long walk and when we passed by a lawn that had recently had plugs removed for ariation purposes, Batman got all excited.  We thought he would run over and start throwing the dirt plugs.  Instead he was concerned that the lawn was broken and spent 20 minutes trying to put as many plugs back in their holes to "fix the broken lawn".  Batman is an environmentalist!!!
Finally we got to the duck pond and armed with a bag of bread pieces, we began seeing how many ducks and turtles we could hit, er, I mean feed.

Pineapple is such a mellow little one and was overjoyed to watch her brother from her grandstand seating.

She tired of the boys' antics and began giving her grandma a facial....

...and manicure!
It is a marvel to watch these two siblings play together.  Both received minutes of joy playing peek-a-boo.
This picture series is called, "The Many Faces of  Batman".  Later in the evening, after Dad got home from school, we all went for a barbeque and a nearby park up in the hills.  While the food was cooking, Batman and Grandpa went for a walk and found a play structure.  Batman found different ways to use the peek holes.

Dad tends to the cooking of a barbequed a huge roast and shiskabobs.  Yummy!  Kevin has a way of turning semi veterinarians into juice slurping, meat devouring, meataholics!!!  We are blessed with several sons that are master barbeque specialists!

While all this was going on, Mellow Pineapple was content to pose for the camera and be doted upon.

Batman, on the other hand was busy dis-robing and re-robing, finding the bathroom to demonstrate his mastered potty skills and telling all the other kids on the play structure his life story.  Did I mention he can run????

Dad used a blanket to let us know it was dinner time.  How did we manage to get a whole evening of activities and not get a picture of Mom?  All those that love their Mommy and wonder why Grandpa did not take a picture of her, raise your hand!

Pineapple casts her vote.

And so does Batman!!

Then after the evening was done and we returned to Kevin and Megan's little apartment, we all relaxed a while before putting the kids to bed.  Wayne found mother and son having a heartfelt discussion and sharing of life stories.  It was touching, so I just took the picture and closed the door.  A perfect day!
The next day we were to fly to New York!

MR COWLEY #2 AND #4 5/2,23,24/2012

One of the great honors in life is to be able to see your children grow up, become adults, spouses, parents and to be successful in a career.  For a few days in May we were able to see our #5 son, Kevin, in all these capacities.  Kevin has completed a year of teaching 4th grade as an intern as he completed the requirements for a B.S. in Elementary Ed. at BYU.  These were his kids, his classroom, his full time teaching job at half pay and full benefits for a full year.  We got to support him in his completion of requirements and graduation and participate in his last few days of teaching.
Proudly, what we witnessed, was a man skilled in his occupation, wise beyond his years of experience and loved by "his kids".
Wayne was excited and honored that he was allowed to put his feet in the stirrups once again and try his hand at story telling and teaching an art lesson.

My, it was fun.  Wayne misses teaching kids, but does not miss all the misdirected political figures that know nothing about educating kids and attempt to mandate how things should be done.  But, it was fun to be back in the classroom again.

And it was fun to see a powerful teacher that is going to bless the lives of many students for many years and know that he is your son, the 4th Mr. Cowley.

To team teach with the likes of Stan Morkert, Dave Scafani, John Finkbiner, Amanda Pyle, Bill Dietz, Carol McCay, Ethel Rogers and others was a career full of honors.......
.....but to team teach with one's son was beyond honor, pride and joy.  It was plain ol' powerful!

Watching Kevin relate to his kids, watching him integrate the technology way beyond what Wayne used, watching him love his kids and be loved back by them was beyond grand.....

....such that Mr Cowley #2 just had to take a seat and just learn from Mr Cowley #4.

Time marches on.  Parents step aside.  The children become the leaders.  Life is good.
