We left our camp, Walkabout Camp and RV Park in Woodbine GA, where we had stayed over a few days to pay bills. Oh, while there Wayne got to visit with a fellow skim boarder from Autralia. They compared stories and beaches. He had never seen a board like Wayne's so Wayne gave him one of his old beat up boards to use as a pattern. He's going to make a few boards for his kids.
Anyway, we left there on May 13 and drove north. We stopped at Savannah, GA to explore and fell in love with the town. If we were going to live on the East coast in a big city, we decided this would be the place. First off, it has great manhole covers!!!
The sandwich shops have character galore. We ate in this one. We shared a fancy salad and enjoyed watching the fellow in the left of this picture because he reminded us so much of Wayne's brother, Cliff.
The city's streets in the old part of town are either brick or cobble stone. Very quiant!
There are tons of houses, mansions and such dating back to 1600's and forward. All in great repair!
And every house has a plaque outside telling of someone famous who slept or had breakfast there.
The city hall was magnificent and the gold dome glittered brightly in the sun.
This is inside the customs house. It is still in use and houses the homeland security offices now.
This is inside the city hall that you have to go past security to get into. Wayne is leaning on the fountain in the center of the rotunda and if you look up from where he was standing......
... you see the beautiful spiral staircase and the rotunda dome. It is a gorgeous building!!!
We waled and walked over several miles today, spending over 4 hours just looking, having lunch and a banana split. It is am amazing place to explore, especially the side streets and alleys!
They have parks everywhere, each set aside by the city charter to honor somebody famous that once lived here and contributed to the development of our country or in this case a battle that was fought here. This was a American Revolution battle that took place at this park.
We took time to walk along the waterfront along the Savannah River and watch the performers looking for contributions and the ships heading too or from the ocean.
There was evidence of the many movies and TV shows that were filmed here using famous old buildings and parks as part of their movie. Anyone recognize this one?
Then there were the tourists! They were the most entertaining of all. Wayne never did convince these tourists that he was Benjamin Franklin.
Recognize this movie house?
Lafayette slept here!
This is their theater!
There are statues in each park recognizing someone famous from here.
How about this bench and the house in the back that was the bank in the movie. Okay, does "Life is like a box of chocolates....." ring a bell?
There are artists and wanna be artists in each park.
Did I mention there are mansions galore?
And a fountain is found in many places.
And Broadway plays to attend... Okay, maybe they are a little behind the times, but things move at a little slower pace here in the south. Remember this musical Ron? Remember when we had hair??
Anyway, we loved Savannah GA. We hated to leave, but by late afternoon we headed north and into South Carolina. We spent the night in Camp WalMart in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
