INTO LOUISIANA 3/22/2011

On 3/21 we left our new refound family and headed further east.  We spent that night at a Wal-Mart in Baytown, TX. Then on 3/22 we drove to Stowell, TX where we had a general delivery package to pick up from Kevin & Megan.  We got there during this small town's lunch break, so the P.O. was closed.  We found a nice field to park next to and while Ann fixed lunch Wayne visited with some new found friends.  He just has that knack at finding friends to visit with.
After lunch, we went to the post office and picked up the package.  Wane was excited to receive an early birthday present of a huge jar of jalapeno picked garlic!!  Yummy!  Look out Louisiana, bad breath is coming!!!
We drove southeast towards and past Port Arthur, TX on Hwy 73 and 82.  We had decided to get off the freeway and travel awhile on some smaller backwoods country roads.  Just a little east of Port Arthur we had to cross a big river.
It, we found, was not a river, but a huge bay.....
... full of barges being pushed out to the ocean.
We got to the other side of the very tall bridge and found a fellow RV'er.
We also found that we were now in Louisiana!!
We were also happy to be informed that we had succeeded at getting onto a backwoods road....
 with lots of roadside attractions!!
The Gulf of Mexico, though providing lots of humidity in the 85 degree heat, was still beautiful.
Then just past Holly Beach we came to a ferry. No bridge, just a ferry.  We had not anticipated this and were worried that our rig would be too big, or if able to load, be very expensive.  We boarded with many other vehicles and found it was free!!!  We sat back and enjoyed the semi long ride.

In this area along the gulf coast, we have sen that there are many preparations for the next hurricane and tidal surge.  This area of the south, bull of bayous, streams, flat land and alligators is regularly flooded.  I marvel that people stay here. It is beautiful and the weather is great, but......
We drove to Roosevelt State Wildlife Refuge.  We pulled off onto a beautiful spot, where with the ranger's permission, we spent a very relaxing and quite evening.  The mosquitoes were quite busy, but no where near as vicious as Canada's black leather jacket wearing, motorcycle riding mosquitoes!
Lulled into peaceful respite by the soft wind wafting through the bamboo lined, alligator inhabited swamp next to us, we admired our view of a beautiful gulf coast sunset that only could be had as one travels across this wonderful USA. We feel so blessed to have this opportunity to see this wonderful country!
