ERNEST WILLIAM KAUFFMAN SO FAR

Wayne has a grandfather that he never met and has been researching his life.
This is what we have found so far:

1890, May 19, – Born in Long Level, Lower Windsor Twp, York County, Pennsylvania; youngest of 9 children to farmers Benjamin S. Kauffman and his wife, Margaret J. Wilt

1900 USA Census found him living in Lower Windsor Twp, Southern District, York Co, PA; Born May 1890; Birthplace Pennsylvania; living with parents, Benjamin Kauffman and Margaret Kauffman, both born in Pennsylvania.  He was white, single;  Also living in the same residence was his sisters Bessie and Jessie (listed as a male)

1910 USA Census found him living with his older sister, Justina W Kauffman, age 23) and, both parents (Benjamin, age 62 and Margarete I., age 60) in Lower Windsor Township, York Co., Pennsylvania working as a baker in his own shop, He could read and write.

1917, June 5, World War I Draft Registration Card (June 5, 1917) Serial # 323609 - Ernest W. 1917, Sept 2 – 1919, May 14:  Served in Army during WW I; Organization Supply Co. 320th Field Artillery; Rank Private

Could not find him on 1920 USA census which is usually run around March.

1920, Nov. 24.  Had moved to Atlantic City, NJ, where he married Elsie Aronson on this date

1922, Jan 2: Lived at 23 1/2 So. Texas, Atlantic City, New Jersey at time of daughter, Gladys Elizabeth's birth

1923, Aug.3: was living at 237 Prospect St., York, Pennnnsylvania. USA with Elsie and Gladys as per a letter addressed to Elsie. 

1925, Feb 15:  Was now living in York, York, Pennsylvania when his son, Torsten Ernest was born

1926, 17 Nov. - By this time Elsie was gone to the west coast.  As per a letter Elsie received addressed to: Elsie Kaufman, 427 Fishburn Ave, Maywood, California - from Dr. Alexander Martin in Los Angeles.  It was a letter of her character and integrity.  He knew her for a year.  So apparently she had left the east coast no later than November of 1925.

1930 – 1930 USA Census: Taken on April 14, 1930, Found him listed as Ernest Kaufman, age 39, birthplace Pennsylvania, Relationship to head of household was "Roomer" which means he was renting a room, at 3513 17th Street, Philadelphia PA, male, white, single, occupation was baker, working for a grocery Company

Newspaper Obit found at Martin County Heritage Trust (Local Historical Society); 250 East Market Street, York, PA, 17403  Phone: 717-848-1587 by Wayne Cowley on 9 June 2011, on microfilm for the Newspaper, :  YORK DISPATCH, dated Tuesday, Feb. 19, 1957;
Earnest W. Kauffman, 66, a native of York County, was found dead in his room, at 1836 Mt. Vernon Street, Philadelphia, PA.  Officials say identification was made by a card in his pocket.  Death is reported to have occurred last Thursday or Friday.  He was born in York County, son of the late Benjamin and Margaret Wilt Kauffman.  He was a baker by trade, a veteran of World War I and a member of Christ Lutheran Church.  His survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Daisy Tredway, Lancaster, PA; Mrs. Jessie Busser, York, PA and Mrs. Edward Sener, Glen Rock, PA  Funeral services will be conducted at 3;30 PM, Thursday in Canadochly Lutheran Cemetery.  The Rev. Dr. Gerald Neely, pastor of Christ Church will officiate.

Died: February 14, 1957 at age 66, alone in his room at 1836 Mt. Vernon Street, Philadelphia, PA.  Was buried two rows over from his parents by family at Canadochly Cemetery, Del Roy, York Co. PA on Feb. 21, 1957
