CARLSBAD CAVERNS, NM 2/18/11

This morning we drove straight through, stopping only in Carlsbad for fuel and breakfast, to Carlsbad Caverns.  This is the most amazing hole in the ground!  It is one of the world's treasures!  We paid out $$ and rode the elevator down into....

... a restaurant, where Ann had a little snack before we began our self guided tour.
This geologic wonder, resembling the Oregon Caves in Cave Junction, Oregon (but on a much larger scale), was amazing to wander through.
 Stalactites and stalagmites abounded!

We even ran into a couple Neanderthals!!
 There is Ogg....
 ..and there is Odd
The outside theater that surrounds the cave allos summer viewers to watch the bats fly out at night, but for the winter visitors, it allows them entrance into the cave from it's natural entrance.
Or it allows for a good picture.
 Ranger Wayne!
After spending all day here, we drove south to Texas, still through very boring, flat land beginning to be punctuated by many oil wells and the smell of hot oil permeating the air.

But before we got to that part of the land, we first had to leave the very scenic National Park of Carlsbad Caverns.
The beautiful Guadalupe Mountains had a totally different beauty and climate than the rest of the surrounding dessert.
There was even water seeping through the ground, albeit, a small amount!
Of course, we always stop and read all the historical markers.  It is fascinating to learn as we go.
But, then we got to the baren farm land and abandoned tractors.
Almost as if they were on display.
FINALLY WE GOT TO TEXAS WHERE EVERYTHING IS BIGGER!!!

And shortly after crossing the border, we were warmly welcomed.  But, the landscape looked the same, except for there were more oil wells!!

Thus we came to the end of our journey through New Mexico and began our travels through Texas.
We drove on to Pecos, Texas, were we spent a night in a noisy Flying J truck stop.  We had heard of people doing that and found it is not to our liking.  Unless desperate. probably our last Flying J sleep over!

ARTESIA, NM 2/17/11

After leaving Bottomless Lakes about 2 PM we drove south to Ariesia, NM.  On the way we saw more flat dessert......
..... and depressed communities.  White City, Oregon looks like paradise and high class living compared to much of the land, towns and homes in this area of New Mexico!
In Artesia, we took a mile or two self guided walk around town.  We found more of the same types of sculptures depicting the late 1800's cattle industry around here and some of the regional famous settlers.
It appeared to us that this area once thrived and now struggles.

You probably can't tread this plaque, but it describes a woman from this area that was quite prominent here in the late 1800's.
At 5:30 PM, this was the temperature here.  The weather has changed to where we are more inclined to wear shorts and not leaving the heater on at night to prevent pipes from freezing.
This was a little parkway full of fountains and murals.  Quite relaxing and restful!!
This landmark theater has been renovated, restored, revamped and, well anyway, it is now the town theater with two screens (!!!) and it only charges $2.00 for seniors.  We had parked our rig in a vacant lot behind the theater while we walked and then after dinner, we went to see a movie.  Saw "Green Hornet">  Ann liked it and Wayne thought the popcorn was really good!!

After the movie we drove to the local WalMart RV Park for the night, sharing the lot with no other RV'ers.  it was very quiet there too, being on the outskirts of a new development.  Good day!!!

BOTTOMLESS LAKES HIKE 2/17/11

Today we spent the morning on a nice long hike through the marshlands and desert to see the amazing lakes surrounding our campsite.

These lakes and the surrounding several dozen miles of land all sank a long time ago because the caves beneath gave way.  So, we were camped in a giant caldera and then there were deeper spots that collapsed beneath the water table and created thes very deep lakes.
It was an amazing geologic lesson, complete with a little brochure and numbered signs that guided us on our several mile walk.  Plus, we ran upon three fishermen who had each caught 5 rainbow trout in these  lakes.  After Wayne took their picture with their camera, this one was kind enough to display the fish to prove there were fish in the lakes.
This lake was two sink holes connected.  The odd thing is one only has saltwater fish in it and the other has only fresh water fish.  Odd eh?

 A friendly native.
There was also a board walk that led out onto the very brown and dry marshland.  There was water, but everything looked dry and dead.  Cliff, I guess we need to come back when you tour these places in the spring.  Linda, they say it gets green in the spring and summer, so I guess we have to believe your husband, eh!
 The boardwalk.
 A needed break!

Back at our little gazebo next to our trailer we were ready to have a shower and then head out to our next destination where we planned to spend the night, Artesia, NM.
We got to Artesia about 4:00 PM and spent the afternoon and evening seeing the sights and having dinner.  Jared, this is where we talked and I told you about the man I met with the big scar on his arm and very few teeth.

BOTTOMLESS LAKES STATE CAMPGROUND 2/16-17/11

Heading south east out of Roswell, we saw scenery that we have seen a lot of lately, dry flatland.  But this was a little different, there were irrigation pipes.  Farming!!!!  Not watering yet though!

We love the road signs here as they incorporate the symbol on the state flag.  Oregon should have beavers on all their road signs!!
Down a windy, bumpy county road we go!
The security officer asking for our reservation !  Very polite visit we had!
Our site that we spent one night in.  Water and electric at the site and great showers nearby.
The view out our kitchen window.
The view out behind the trailer.
We spent the afternoon relaxing and caching up on a few electricity needing things.

ROSWELL, NM 2/16/11

We stayed the night of the 15th in the same Wal-Mart parking lot of  and the next day we did some more touring of Roswell on the way out of town.
The county courthouse looked like a state capital building.  It was beautiful, so we decided to drive around the block and find a place to park, so we could go inside and see the rotunda.
In the parking lot we turned around in we saw this sculpture depicting Mr. Chisum who owned and ranched a vast amount of land in New Mexico.  It was a grand sculpture!
Then, after looking like complete tourists at the security check in the rear entrance, they sucumbed to our innocent looking faces and touristy clothing and let us in with our camera and cell phone!!  They even gave us a personalized tour of the historical court room.
Here is Ann on the floor below the rotunda.  Beautiful tile work!!!

This is looking up at the rotunda.
This town has many historical churches.
Ann likes to take pictures of churches.
 Guess who took this one?

 And this one?
As we left town towards Bottomless Lakes State Campground, we also toured a Mexican wholesale outlet store.  We have been seeing more of these as we head south.  It was very interesting, but the prices are very touristy.
