EXPLORING BATON ROUGE, LA 3/26/2011

We took part of our last day in Baton Rouge to explore the old capitol building, the new one, some parks and walk along the Mississippi River.
The old building is a beautiful one that represented the wealth found in the area in the mid 1800's.
The beautiful spiral staircase as you enter the building....
...that leads up to the second floor housing the senate and the house chambers...

...and further up, the stained glass dome.
Even the hinges, like we have seen in so many capitol buildings we have visited were ornate.
Then as we walked along the Mississippi, we were witness to children making do on this 88 degree day of the public fountains. These little boys played in many fountains as we walked along, but none went in the river. A couple times a brave one would run down and tag ghte river, or quickly stick his foot in it and then run away. For some reason the river was off limits to them.
A battle retired battleship on permanent duty as a tour piece sits in the Mississippi River.
The Big Mo!
It had been a grand river and a grand capital, but now is a big city with all the pitfalls of vice and ghetto. We were able to find some nice places as we explored, but some of the people we came in contact with and some of the poverty we saw left a sad taste in our mouths as we left.
